ABOUT ME

I am hermione.

I am an educator, feminist and geographer.

This website updates inspirational women and their stories/work (collected by hermione, her friends and collaborators who support this project) in blogs and locate these content on world maps. These maps will be developed into interactive ones for everyone to contribute and edit.

Open-call for contributions:

I am grateful to so many people (already have a long list, will list them later in March), especially Professor Anindita Datta (chair of the International Geographical Union Gender Commission) who suggests me writing a google form so that the Commission can circulate this project with their mailing list.

Here I also share the google form in case anyone who reads here would like to contribute: Name your inspirations (women in geography)

I also wrote an open-letter to IGU Gender Commission about nominating inspirational women in geography: Inspirational Women in Geography

Open-call for collaborators:

I have a background in geography and take pride in it, hence I start from geography. And I am aware that there will be women like me from other fields who may also find this project interesting and want to mapping inspirational women in their fields. I am more than happy to discuss and chat about ideas.

Below are some preliminary examples to show you what the project would like when you click the maps:

26th Feb 2023

I start this wordpress blog and will come back to this next Sunday to update the mapping progress. It is a side project that I do besides my PhD study (geography teachers’ agency in curriculum making). My initial ideas was to develop this as educational resources for young girls to have a map that they can go around to look female roles models. I had this idea come up and asked around, found that this kind of map does not seem to exist yet. Hence, I contacted friends and colleagues to help me with this project. I have got support from my friends, colleagues, as well as International Geographical Union Gender Commission’s support. I am working on to make what I have got into interactive world maps. I am currently deciding between using google maps or ESRI storymaps. If anyone who reads this blog have some ideas or suggestions, please feel free to contact me.

In-person Events:

For people who are based in Stirling (Scotland):

If you have time and interest, think about finding some time on 8th March (Wednesday) to visit the University of Stirling. I (hermione) will open an interactive world map exhibition (which put inspirational women nominated by FoSS colleagues on the map) in the Common Room, Colin Bell Building, Faculty of Social Sciences (FoSS), University of Stirling. The eventbrite link will be updated here on 28th Feb 2023.

For those who like art, the University’s Art Collection Team will do a guided tour in the Pathfoot Building from 1.00-1.30 pm on 8th March. The art collection team has put it in this link: Gallery gatherings: spotlight on women artists
